Hello to all in the American Legion Family, Now that the hot weather is behind us, let’s not forget to check the batteries in our smoke and CO2 detectors. I along with SC National Executive Committeeman (NEC) Jim Moore went to the National Convention in Louisville, KY in august. Our new National Commander Mark Arneson from Georgia was elected. Our National Commander set our goals high. He would like to see the SAL raise $500,000.00 for the Child welfare Foundation. WE in SC will have to raise the bar as well. I'm currently losing weight to raise money to send to CWF. I weighed in at 289 at the fall conference and weigh out at the mid winter conference in January. I will send information to each sqdn. to help SC raise the bar for CWF. Currently SC has sent two thousand this year already. The detachment sent $1,000.00 and Sqdn 34 Rock Hill sent $1000.00. We need to raise another $2,500.00 if possible. Another goal from our National Commander was for each Detachment to charter ten new squadrons. We'll see what we can do with that one. More members means more help. Last year’s goals were met but this is a new year. I know everyone has their priorities but let’s try and meet this year’s goals as well. Clint Bolt from Catlett, VA was elected Southern Vice Commander. He has been sending me emails stressing renewals, renewals, and renewals. If you want me to send you a copy of any National news send your email address to ajh9601@aol.com. October 14th is our 25% target date, as of 9/25/09 we were at 11.25% I know it's a hard job but LET'S GET THEM IN. We just had our Fall Conference in Columbia, SC at the end of September. I would like to thank those who attended especially my Friday night bodyguards, but I would like to see more at our meetings. That was the last Fall Conference. We will have A Mid-Winter conference starting in January 2010. The dates and info are on the website. Our mid-Winter Conference meeting will be January 23, 2010. Every Squadron will get the call to conference soon. Our meeting was opened at 1:30 pm. We had two guests; first we had the Leading candidate for The American Legion Jimmie Foster from Alaska which is the largest state in the union. He spoke to us continuing the great work we do for our veterans. He also spoke about maintaining membership and getting new membership. It was our pleasure to have Jimmie Foster at our conference. Our other guest was American Legion member Sonny Rash from Goose Creek. Sonny is now on the SAL committee for The American Legion. The Commander's Challenge will be losing weight for CWF. For Every pound I lose I will donate $10.00 per lb and everyone else can donate what they can afford, like I said earlier I weighed in at 289 and weigh out will be at the mid-winter conference. I will send the info packet to each squadron this week and I will need a contact person from each squadron. I was supposed to do this challenge earlier this year but needed knee surgery, I'm better now, I have a goal, and I have someone who inspires me. As a son we do what we do for our veterans because what they did for us. Don't forget to thank a Veteran today. For God and Country' Andrew J. Hornbuckle Detachment Commander
